- Description: Sail, cloth, and a line of shore. A crossing holds a small distance between leaving and arriving.

Beside a sail, the edge of a deck becomes a place to pause. Cloth pulls against the breeze above a seated figure, and water moves in the space between the boat and the land. For a while, the next useful action can wait. There is enough to notice without deciding where the journey should lead.

A crossing changes the scale of a day. On land, a route is measured through doors, roads, and places to stop. From a small boat, those divisions begin to soften. The shoreline becomes one long surface, and the wind gives the sail a shape that never settles for very long.

The last crossing need not happen after dark to feel like a boundary. It may simply be the final movement before a return to ordinary tasks. A place to sit, a hand kept near the edge, a fold of clothing gathered out of the way: small adjustments give that interval a practical form.

## Between shores

Belongings gather closely around the people aboard. A strap is shortened so a bag will be easier to carry. A loose layer is drawn closer as the air changes. The preparations are small because the journey is already under way. Attention goes to making the chosen things manageable for the next part.

From the deck, the shore gathers into another kind of image. A ridge rises above the water, and the distances between familiar points become easier to compare. Small activities disappear before the larger shapes do. Departure makes a place briefly readable as a whole, although nobody living there would experience it so simply.

Sail, light, and the view beyond the deck.

The interval asks less than the tasks on either side. A person can watch the water without deciding what the view is for. Another keeps a hand against the deck, feeling each small movement arrive through the wood. There is no obligation to make the passage productive or memorable. For the moment, being carried is enough.

## Finding a way

The other shore begins as a line, then separates into surfaces. A pale mark becomes a landing place; the darker area beside it begins to suggest a path. Recognition arrives in stages. The destination is changing from something to look at into somewhere a body will have to move through.

Later, a sound from the crossing may remain clearer than the view. Cloth drawing tight in the wind, or water meeting the side of the boat. One place had moved beyond reach, while another had not yet asked very much. There was still room to sit beside the sail, and water close enough to hear.
