# The Shape of Return

A white sleeve crosses another against a field of snow. For a moment, two figures share the same gesture. Beyond them, tracks separate into routes that are difficult to follow all the way back.

Returning in winter begins with familiar preparations. A strap is tightened, a collar adjusted, a hand held still while the other finds its place. The body remembers some of these actions before the view has become recognizable.

The slope offers a different arrangement each time. Light flattens one distance and sharpens another. A line that looked simple from below becomes several decisions when it is reached, with another person waiting some way ahead.

The small preparations around the next movement.

Repeating a movement makes small changes easier to feel. A turn is taken with more room around it. A pause lasts longer. The previous attempt remains available as a comparison, while the ground keeps offering something it did not offer before.

Between runs, the people come together again. Goggles are raised, a sleeve is brushed clean, and the broad landscape becomes the space around a conversation. The interval belongs to the day as much as the movement that brought everyone there.

A group returns to the same open ground.

Another return will leave different marks. Some of the route will feel certain, and a change in weather will make another part unfamiliar. There is enough continuity to begin again without expecting the same journey.
