An unfamiliar place does not have to be distant. Even a well-known neighborhood contains paths that have never served a practical purpose. They lead away from the shop, the station, or the quickest way home. Taking one changes the order in which the same buildings are encountered, and sometimes that is enough to make them visible.
Beyond an opening, a courtyard introduces another temperature of light. Terracotta walls hold a warm edge around a patch of water. The street remains close enough to hear, though the view has acquired its own slower scale.
