- Description: Clear a surface, fill a glass, begin again. An ordinary meal can give a busy day a little shape.

The table begins with an empty place. A bowl is set down, water moves from one vessel to another, and a practical task acquires a few seconds of attention before the rest of the meal arrives.

Ordinary gestures become recognizable through repetition. A cloth is unfolded in a particular direction. A cup lands near the edge of a hand. These arrangements do not need to be elaborate to make the room feel ready for somebody to sit down.

Outdoors, the same gestures meet less predictable conditions. A cloth moves in the breeze, water reflects through a glass, and something has to hold the corner of a page. The table finds its order through those small adjustments.

Something set down before the meal begins.

A glass catches the light before it holds anything. Its usefulness will come later; for now the outline is enough to give that part of the table a shape. Looking at it briefly changes the pace of preparation, without requiring the work to stop.

There are evenings when the meal stays simple and the conversation is the longer part. A plate is moved to make room for a letter, or a chair turns toward someone who has just arrived. The arrangement adapts to the people using it.

The gathering is part of the arrangement.

The ceremony is small enough to disappear into the day. Afterwards, there are bowls to wash and a surface to wipe. One thing is left within reach for the morning. The table has done what was asked of it, and the room is available for something else.
